Registered Berkshire Pigs
History of Berkshire Pigs:

Berkshire pigs are a rare breed of pig originating from Berkshire in England.
Herds of the breed are still maintained in England by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust at Aldenham Country Park, Hertfordshire, and by the South of England Rare Breeds Centre in Kent. The Berkshire is listed as 'vulnerable', as in 2008 fewer than 300 breeding sows were known to exist.  Some pigs of the breed are also kept in New Zealand, but it is estimated that there are now fewer than a hundred purebred sows there.

In the United States, the American Berkshire Association, established in 1875, gives pedigrees only to pigs directly imported from established English herds or to those tracing directly back to such imported animals. The pig is also bred in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, under the trademarked name Kagoshima Kurobuta.

Characteristics of Berkshire Pigs:

Berkshires are early-maturing pigs well covered with short black hair, often with white hair on their legs, faces, and tips of the tails. The snouts are dished and are of medium length. The ears are fairly large and are erect or slightly leaned forward. They have fine wrinkle-free necks and well-sloped shoulder blades. They have short, straight legs and a straight underline belly.  They’re hardy, they have good mothering capabilities and they perform very well outdoors, especially when grazing on pasture. Their meat is darker than commercial pork and far more flavorful than the pork found in your grocery store freezer.

A spring gilt born March 26, 2010, Lilly Miss Woof Daddy proudly won 1st place in her registered Berkshire class and she placed 3rd in the Market Hog class at the Benton County Arkansas Fair in August 2010 owned and shown then by Sierra Ferguson. We bought and added this fine gilt to our herd in March 2011. Great muscling!!  Nice blocked up back and huge hams.  Makes monster piglets!

Minnnie joined our farm as a weanling. We picked this gilt up in northeast Georgia. She has that traditional "old school" berkshire build. Great maternal traits.  She farrows 10-12 piglets per litter and has weaned all of them.

She came out of our first litter on the farm and she has been a little puppy dog for us. We sold the other gilt out of the litter as a show prospect and kept Lucy. This litter was awesome. They are all extremely personable and they have great builds. We look forward to Lucy continuing Daisy's great bloodline. We have seen great growth rates off of her.

Another addition to Mitchell Family farm courtesy of John Godard. This girl is the sister to SKYWAY 3-6. She took 4th at the 2013 regionals. We look forward to breeding her to Mordecai Jr for her first litter. She has much the same build as her sister, Thick shoulders, square front and beautiful hams.

Little Mordi is a boar that we kept off of the previous Mordecai. His Sire was HUGE across the front and very long, but lacked ham size. We bred him on the farm to "Lilly" and we've been pretty happy with the results. Mordecai Jr has sired 3 litters on our last round. The piglets have been beautiful.
